Courage League 1988/89

Overview
For the first time fixtures had been arranged by RFU. Each team met every opponent only once.
The best team in the table, Bath, was proclamed national champion while the 2 worst teams (Waterloo and Liverpool St Helens) were relegated to National League 2.
Points were awarded as follows: 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.

The league was sponsored by Courage Brewery.
