Overview

In 1973/74 Scotland was the first of the Home Nations to set up a domestic league.
Before the birth of the league clubs played friendly matches and newspaper calculated an unofficial table to crown an unofficial scottish champion.

The league pyramid

The last reform of the league pyramid was in 2014. Since 2014/15 season the league structure is the following:

Level 1 Premiership
10 teams - 1 team to relegation playout and 1 relegation
Level 2 National One
12 teams - 1 promotion, 1 team to promotion playoff and 2 relegations
Level 3 National Two
12 teams - 2 promotions and 2 relegations
Level 4 National Three
12 teams - 2 promotions and 3 relegations
Level 5 to 8 Caledonia League
4 levels - 1 promotion
East Regional League
3 levels - 1 promotion
West Regional Division
4 levels - 1 promotion
