Overview

In 1990/91 Wales and Ireland were the last of the Home Nations to organize a domestic league.
Before the birth of the league clubs played friendly matches and newspaper calculated an unofficial table to crown an unofficial welsh champion.
In 1999/00 WRU and SRU joined their efforts to create a Welsh-Scottish League with 2 professional scottish side (Edinburgh and Glasgow) joining welsh premiership.
After 3 years, this led to the birth of Celtic League with the partecipation of welsh, scottish and irish teams.
Until the regionalization of welsh rugby, Premiership clubs played Heineken Cup, Challenge Cup and Celtic League. After that they were replaced by the 4 professional franchises.
Since 2009 the best welsh clubs play British & Irish Cup
