Overview

It is the first level of european club cups.

A first attempt to create a Champions Cup was made by FIRA, now Rugby Europe, in the 1960's with the FIRA Champions Cup. This tournament, though, was unsuccesfull and was discontinued after only 3 editions.
In 1995, with the birth of professionalism, the new ECR (European Club Rugby) created the Heineken Cup that was transformed in 2014 in the Champions Cup with the revamping of ECR in EPCR (European Professional Club Rugby).
After the 2014 reform the led to the birth of Champions cup, the qualifiers are as follows:

Nation Qualified teams
England The best 6 teams in Premiership
France The best 6 teams in Top 14
Ireland The best Irish team in Pro12
Wales The best Welsh team in Pro12
Scotland The best Scottish team in Pro12
Italy The best Italian team in Pro12
Ireland, Italy, Wales or Scotland The 3 best teams in Pro12 not yet qualified
Any of the 6 nations The winner of playoff among the 7th in Premiership, the 7h in Top 14 and the best not qualified in Pro12
Challenge Cup winner, if not yet qualified, gains its competition spot.
